Cole/Whittier Community-Police Collaboration Meeting: April 9th

Please join us Monday, April 9th, at 6PM at Mitchell Elementary (1350 E. 33rd Avenue) for the latest in a series of collaborative community meetings to help shape what the new Community Safety Plan will look like in Cole-Whittier. We've made huge strides over the last few meetings, but need the cooperation and input from as many residents as possible. Some potential topics for discussion:
  • Help finalize the Community Safety Survey and plan for survey distribution
  • Review current neighborhood safety data
  • Work with other residents and DPD to envision the implementation of the new community safety plan

We need more residents to be involved in the planning process to ensure this program's success--And whatever your vision is for Cole-Whittier--Whether it's large-scale redevelopment, increased commerce and services, improved healthcare services or education--It all starts with community safety and crime prevention.

For more information, contact Karla Loaiza at 720.276.1492.

We hope to see you there.

The best way to fight crime in Cole is to oppose illegal immigration. The Hispanic Crimewave that has gripped Denver can only be solved by reducing the population of illegal aliens.

Thanks for reading. While I agree with your sentiment, I disagree that the "best way to fight crime" is opposing illegal immigration, simply because it's not clear what action our government is going to take to fight the illegal immigration, especially if a democrat is elected into the White House in 2008.

Im my opinion we do need to get tougher on illegal immigration, but there are many things we can do right now, today, in our neighborhoods to make them safer. I encourage you to become involved with C-WAC as they need all the help and input they can get.

Sure point the finger at the Mexicans. Typical.

I'm assuming you're referring to the other anonymous poster for "pointing the finger at the Mexicans?"

While I agree that one shouldn't single out Mexicans, Hispanics in general, or African Americans as the cuprits for Cole's crime problem (criminals commit crimes, not blacks, whites or Hispanics), it IS true that many of the problems in the neighborhood are due to Hispanic gangs. Also, as I've pointed out before, it's sheer statistical probability that most of Cole's crimes comes from minorities, with the population of Cole being at least 91% black and Hispanic, compared to Denver's citywide average of 43% and its suburban average of 17% (all these numbers are from piton.org, and the 2000 census FYI). But I can't stress enough, don't confuse correlation with causation.

Additionally, looking at Denver's growth from 1990 to 2000, it's estimated (again from piton.org) that 79% of the growth has been the influx of Latinos. Now in a whopping 21 of 76 neighborhoods in Denver, Latinos are the majority.

So, for most neighborhoods, taking out any assumptions about economic or other factors that cause crime, it's simply the law of averages that most crime in the city comes from Hispanic culprits, since they're the vast majority. (Cole is one of the few remaining Denver neighborhoods that actually has a significant black population too.)

I can't seem to find any numbers on how many of these new, Hispanic residents are illegals, but you don't have to look far to find the cost to our society, crime notwithstanding. There have been numerous articles written about it.

So again, I agree, we are to some extent experiencing a Hispanic crimewave, the numbers make a far stronger case than folks treating the illegal immigration issue with kid gloves, trying not to offend anyone. But I'm not going to start pointing the finger at my Hispanic neighbors because of it.

Again, I feel there are many things we can do TODAY that we have 100% control over that can make a difference. Clean up your block. Get to know your neighbors, even if they're potentially illegals. Illegal or not, find out the ones you can trust, look out for their homes and they'll look out for yours. Don't stand for irresponsible landlords renting to the criminal element, no matter what color they are.

Don't wait for the government to solve the problem, create your own solution.
